March 2001
Porky’s Barbeque

Greetings:

So last night I'm sitting in my living room here in L.A. talking to Karen (my girlfriend), and I said: "I had lunch at this great barbeque place in Oklahoma yesterday!" We were both suddenly struck dumb with horror at the statement because I had stopped at that place while driving from New York to L.A.- I made it in three days. The lunch comment just really put the absurdity of the whole thing into exceedingly sharp focus. The barbeque joint in question was called Porky's Barbeque (nobody beats our meat!!). I knew it would be great, 'cause the place was an absolute dump. The parking lot was a crumbling mess, the name of the place was painted right onto the side of the wall in a red that had long since faded to a peeling, disconsolate pink. The interior featured a worn counter with stools done in red naugehyde patched with generous amounts of duct-tape. The menu items were written in magic-marker on a piece of cardboard tacked to the wall. Rolls of paper towels right there on the counter. This sort of a setting is always a really good indication that really good pork ribs, hot links, and potato salad are in the offing. If you see a place claiming to serve barbeque that has a fancy backlit plastic sign on the outside, and a tastefully engraved sign that says: "Please Wait To Be Seated" on the inside, you can be pretty well assured that the barbeque will be, at best, a short step or two above a McRib sandwich.

I've been on the road for 2 months and it was one of the best trips ever. Played all over the eastern seaboard. Opened for Saffire the Uppity Blues Women, Roomful of Blues, and Johnny Johnson (just two weeks before his induction into the rock and roll hall of fame). Drew great crowds as a headliner. Got some good ink in the papers. Went to the Mardi Gras. Can't complain. I'll only be home for three days, then I'm off again. Two weeks in Northern California, as you can see from this card. Many of the shows will be in the round with my friends Dave Nachmanoff, Keith Greeninger, and Jay Howlett. We've done this before, and the gigs were all a great success, and a hell of a lot of fun, as well. These guys are all very talented, so don't miss it. Also, I'll be headlining at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley for the first time. Be sure to make yer reservations now! See you all out there.

Love, Bob
