Sittin’ In At Pappy & Harriet’s

Buckaroos:
I just got back from a weekend in Pioneertown, CA, out in the Mojave desert on the edge of Joshua Tree State Park. The town is a former Gene Autry old-west movie set from the 40s that squatters turned into a town after Hollywood abandoned it in the 50s. Even has its own Post-Office. It's a place where even I can't get lost – the whole town has only one street. We stayed at the Pioneertown Inn in room 9 - better know to Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and their cronies as Club 9 – it's where they drank whiskey and played cards after a hard day on the set. This weekend, however, it's where I drank whiskey (forget the cards) after a hard day on the 10 freeway, trying to get the hell out of LA. I've had a couple of weeks off from the road and this was a little mini-vacation I took so as to try and keep myself out of trouble. Yeah, right. The coolest thing about Pioneertown is that it has one of the ten best bars in the entire universe (someday, I'll give you the rest of the list): the legendary Pappy & Harriet's. Cheap beer, great bar-b-q, and a kickass country-western band every night. It's like a Texas honky-tonk except with no Texans. Perfect. I got up to do one song with the band and ended up playing all night. A never-ending supply of free Margaritas served in Mason jars (!) and shots of cheap tequila was my pay for the night. No complaints here.
This month I'll be on the East Coast for some gigs with Average White Band, and then back home again. On July 8 I'll be doing my first headlining gig in the Monterey Bay Area, at Henfling's. Those of you who have seen me at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center but always wished you could have heard more than a 20 minute opening set will now get your chance. On July 13, I play with my band at B.B. King's Blues Club at Universal Citywalk in North Hollywood. This will probably be our last L.A. date for a while because we'll be heading back to the Northeast to do a summer-tour that will include the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, among other things. B.B. Kings is a beautiful room with a big stage and first-class sound and lights, so don't miss the show!!
Many thanks to all the people that came out to my show with Strunz & Farah at House Of Blues in Hollywood - it was really great to see you all there. We're working on a new record with a tentative release date of Sooner Or Later. I'll keep you posted – see ya!
Love, Bob
