The Infamous Jewel Letter

Hey Sports Fans:

I just got one question: what's with this Jewel chick? Four weeks I’m on the road bustin’ my ass, just me and the car radio, and every station I tune in to (except for in the Midwest, where they're still playing frigging “We Built This City” in regular rotation) is playing this Jewel singing that stupid song about how she made a smiley face with her bacon & eggs. I mean, who gives a rip? I made bacon and eggs this morning – I broke a yolk and got grease on my shirt – that doesn't mean I'm gonna go write a fuckin' song about it! And what's with the overwrought singing? She sounds as if she's the only person in the whole world who's ever been dumped. Hey honey – you're 20 years old, you’re rich and single, you've never paid alimony or taxes, and you've never had to play “The Girl from Impenema”at a wedding gig so you could put together enough money to get your phone turned back on – you don't know what pain is! HOPE I DON'T SOUND TOO BITTER!

I feel so much better now.

I’m just back from a month of traveling. Between July 1 and 30 I went to Black Mountain (N.C.), Atlanta, New Orleans, Nashville, Champaign, Chicago, Ann Arbor, Syracuse, New York City and New Hampshire, and wrapped it all up at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in New York State. While there, I got to play in the round (in the rain) with Marty Sexton & Vance Gilbert and it was a real privilege. If you don't own their records, find them and BUY them. You won't be disappointed.

This month I'm back on the East Coast for one more quick run before the Summer ends. I'll be down around D.C. for the Music Americana Showcase. After that, I’m playing a cool blues festival in Marshfield, MA (probably with a late night stop at Peter Black's Wide World of Blues show on WATD as well) and then I’m flying to Texas for the Kerrville Wine & Music Festival. Part of the perks that I get at that show are free wine tasting tickets, which is really cool but I’m still hoping that someday there'll be a Kerrville Bourbon & Music Festival – I’ll pay admission to play at that one!

As you can see, we finally got a gig at House of Blues. It’s been a long time coming and I’d like to thank Josh Katzman for all the work he did to make it happen. Needless to say, we could really use your support at this one. I know 20 bucks is a lot of dough, but hey: you get to see Paul Rodgers one more time before he gets too fat to fit into those spandex pants. Don’t forget your lighter for “Shooting Star.” That’s all the news, see you soon…

Love, Bob
