Where Can I Get A Drink Around Here?

I'm baaaack:

Well, it was five glorious months in New York City, followed by three interesting weeks playing shows in NC, SC, GA, TN, OK, TX, and NE on the way back here to L.A. This summer, I did 28 shows in NYC, Boston, NY State, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington DC.

As I traveled through the heartland this month, I was taken aback by how hard it can be to get a drink in the vast continental space between New York & L.A. For example: in Oklahoma, if you want to buy cold beer at a convenience store, you can only get 2.3 beer. If you want beer with an alcoholic content that matters, you have to buy it warm at a liquor store. In Utah, you can get arrested for buying your friend a drink, and you cannot, under any circumstances, get a shot and a beer at the same time. In Texas, dry counties abound, yet there are bars in them. In order to drink at these bars, you have to pay a dollar and join some club that allows you to drink in public. You fill out a lengthy form and are issued a membership card so you can re-attain your right as an American to have a glass of wine with dinner. In the rest of the South, if you have the misfortune of finding yourself in a dry county, there ain't no club in the world that can get you past the Baptists to the liquor cabinet! However, you can smoke all the unfiltered cigarettes you want while eating your fried food. What happened to the separation of church and state? I guess it depends on which state you're talking about...

We're closing in on the completion of the third Bob Malone CD, so there won't be a whole lot of live shows 'til it's done, but, as you can see, there are a few. In October, we play The Mint in Hollywood…haven't played there in nearly four years. Since then, is has been expanded to twice its original size. The stage is bigger, the lights are great, the p.a. is better… they cleaned the joint up real nice. On October 3rd, I return to House of Blues in N'Awlins to open for Average White Band. I did 2 shows with them this summer, and we always have a great time!

Until we meet again, just remember: beauty, as they say, is strictly in the eye of the beer-holder.

Love, Bob
